United Methodist Pastoral Care and Counseling, Inc.
Pastoral Care Specialist Certificate Program
September 2010 - May 2011
Application Deadline July 1, 2010
United Methodist Pastoral Care and Counseling offers a pastoral care training program which is approved by the
Board of Ordained Ministry of the North Alabama United Methodist Conference to fulfill the resident-in-ministry
requirement of Clinical Pastoral Education. The components of this training program are not only comparable to an
approved CPE program, but it is designed to be more practical
and relevant in its scope to our clergy.
The goals of the training program are to focus on the emotional and spiritual health and stability of our clergy
so they would be more equipped to provide effective and professional pastoral care. It also educates clergy in
recognizing important criteria having to do with emotional and mental issues effecting their congregations and how
to make appropriate counseling referrals. This program is parish based, in that the clergy would receive
supervision/consultation regarding the ministries and pastoral care needs at their current appointment.
The training module would also meet criteria for American Association of Pastoral Counselors Pastoral Care
Specialist (see attached). Someone considering a full time chaplaincy appointment, would want to complete
an ACPE accredited unit of CPE.
The pastoral care specialist training program meets every other Tuesday for nine months from 9:00-4:00pm,
plus five hours per week of direct supervised pastoral care. The training day consists of:

Hope Begins With You!
Attend A
4HELP
Suicide Prevention Training
Did you know that a person dies by suicide every 16 minutes in the United States and at least 3 people kill
themselves every 2 days in Alabama? Every day in the United States, 1500 people attempt suicide. Suicide
is the 3rd leading cause of death among aged
15-24 years. It is the second leading cause of death amongcollege students.
How can we better address this silent epidemic? One way is to attend one of the 4HELP suicide prevention
trainings offered by United Methodist Pastoral Care and Counseling and our North Alabama Conference.
We will begin offering suicide prevention
training to clergy and laity under a community-equipping program
entitled 4HELP. The development of 4HELP is an unprecedented ministry program established for our
conference, as well as, for the State of Alabama.
The mission of 4HELP is to better equip clergy and laity to offer hope, and more importantly, save lives.
